AKA: Volunteer Hours
One of the requirements for all students in Ontario is to complete 40 hours of community involvement in order to receive an Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD). Students may begin accumulating community involvement hours in the summer before they enter grade 9. The purpose of this requirement is to encourage students to develop an understanding of the various roles they can play in serving their community and to help them develop a greater sense of belonging within the community.
When must students complete it?

When you begin to plan, think about activities in your community, school or with an individual. Some ideas are listed below, but use your imagination. The list is endless

- Any time during the secondary school program, beginning in the summer before they enter grade 9, and prior to graduation.
- outside class hours, for example:
- during lunch breaking the evening
- on weekends
- during school breaks
- during the summer months

- Check with your neighbours
- Inquire whether there are appropriate initiatives at summer schools/camps etc.
- Contact your local volunteer centre for current activities
